The University of Madeira (Universidade de Madeira) or UMA is a public university located in Funchal in the island of Madeira in Portugal. Established in 1988, it started as an extension of Lisbon University. It depended on the support of private and government institutions during its first few years of operation. It initially used the 16th century College of Jesuits building. Now, the university is made up of several buildings, with a new campus located in the outskirts of Funchal city.
The university offers administrative and rectory services. In 1992, it broadened its academic offerings by establishing different academic departments and degree programmes.
